January 4-5: Sandy Zelasko - Salton Sea Storytelling Photography: A two-day eye-opening journey around California's largest inland lake. Experience the cultures, bird life and restoration projects which surround it today. This photo workshop will provide participants an opportunity to understand how conservation photography can motivate and inspire others. January 15 & 22: Wayne Wilcoxen – Paper Mache Bowls: A two-part workshop where you will learn how to make a beautiful decorative bowl using paper mache and your imagination. In the first part on January 15, you will build your shaped bowl by building up layers of paper on a mold that you select. In the second part on January 22 you will finish and decorate your bowl. Class will meet each session from 10:00 to 1:00 or a little longer. Fee including most supplies: $65 for BAI members, $75 for non members. January 25-26: Nadine Spier – Ornate Coiled Basketry:  A two-day class in the BAI Gallery, 10:00-4:00. Students will learn how to coil a delicate basket around a polished stone. It’s an easy way to start a basket and makes a beautiful center.  The instructor will teach students to coil so that the stitches are identical on both sides of the basket.  As time permits, some students may learn more advanced techniques. Pine needles and Irish waxed linen thread are provided, but the coiling technique can later be used to weave many common plants including Jacaranda stems, lavender, dusty miller, rosemary. This class is suitable for beginners or experienced basketmakers.  To view the instructor’s work, visit her website at www.nadinespier.com.  Nadine’s baskets have been featured on the Discovery Channel, in the collector's book “500 Baskets” and published in over 30 periodicals. January 31: Karin Felker-Harris - Painting the Prickly Pear:  For all who would like to learn new skills in watercolor, enhance your personal style or explore new techniques. This class if for you. 10:00-3:30 in the BAI Gallery.  Karin will demonstrate and share individual instruction in mixing vibrant colors, strong design and sharing the impact of light and shadow with easy-to-learn steps...all to enhance the "Joy of Watercolor." February 6-7: Stu Bailey - Stone Carving:  Two-day class, 9:00-4:00 each day. Learn the art of carving stone and create a small sculpture out of alabaster from our local mine. Class fee includes all instruction, materials, tools and lunches. Class size is limited to 6 but a second class can be arranged on February 2-0 and 21 if more wish to sign up. Fee: $300. February 22-23: Wabi Sabi Weaving  - Free Style SAORI Weaving: A two-day class in the BAI Gallery, 11:00-4:00. Participants will learn how to weave creatively, following the SAORI philosophy of “no rules, no mistakes”.   We will be immersed in the peaceful, meditative process of mindful creativity as we use a variety of colors and textures to produce personal, one of a kind hand woven art. Participants will enjoy weaving on full size SAORI floor looms, with a wide range of yarns and fibers.  We will experience the joy of unintentional weaving and the beautifully imperfect, individual results.  This class is perfect for those with no prior weaving experience, or experienced weavers.  While intended as a two day exploration, participants unavailable for both days may choose to weave for one day with prior arrangement.  If you already have some creative weaving experience, and would like to continue your journey on a particular work in progress, please contact me to make arrangements. Class size limited to 6 students.  Bring your lunch, or enjoy the fabulous treats of Kesling’s Kitchen next door. March 9-10: Scott W. Prior – Back to Basics Plein Air Workshop: Join Scott W. Prior, our 2020 Plein Air Invitational Juror, for a two-day plein air painting adventure in beautiful Borrego Springs, CA. Times to be announced. Honest observation, confident brushwork, solid design and value, clean color and personal vision are hallmarks of Prior’s work. Through lecture, demonstration, and side-by-side easel assistance, Scott will share his hard-earned insights into cracking the codes to better painting. Students will be focusing on the basics, working on composition, values, edge control, proportion and color. Learning to see and communicate what they see with paint. CANCELED March 18: Wayne Wilcoxen – Oil Pastel Demonstration: A two to three-hour demonstration, 4:00 to approximately 6:30. Wayne will do a medium sized image (abstract or representational), discuss the intricacies of working with oil pastel, different techniques, and different media that can be mixed with oil pastels. CANCELED March 23: Kati Cowan - Self Discovery through Photography: 10:00am-4:00pm in the BAI Gallery. In this course you will hone the basic skills necessary to create good images along with developing an awareness of why you take certain pictures. While a camera capable of adjustable settings is desirable the emphasis in this class is more about basic techniques and self awareness that would allow participants to use simple cameras, even cell phone cameras. Fee: $85 for BAI members, $95 for non-members.

CANCELED April 22: Kevin Wixom - Night Sky Photography:  Meet at BAI Gallery at 8:00 pm for classroom work then travel with Kevin to a secret location to shoot the night sky in Borrego Springs. The Milky Way will be bright in the sky making for stunning night sky photos. Space is limited so registration is required.
